‘Our father’:
We name you for relationship
And then say that name is holy.
Holier than ours?
Certainly our names are tainted,
Our relationships unhallowed in so many degrees,
Yet as we name each other
With some small attempted reverence
Do we take your name
As children take their family name?
Naturally, without thought
But as a hallmark, observable only with persistence
And turning upside down.
Yet we lack even the desire to care for each other.
And so we persist in needing you to observe us
And upturn us
That we may spare each other
bread, trials and malice.
In the name of your son, our brother,
